
The Hidden Design Flaws of E-Scooters – Are They Really Safe?

Electric scooters (e-scooters) have rapidly become a popular transportation alternative in cities worldwide. Marketed as eco-friendly and convenient, they offer a solution for "last-mile" transportation. However, despite their many advantages, their design harbors critical flaws that pose safety risks.
Small Wheels – A Big Problem
Most e-scooters are equipped with small wheels, typically between 150-200mm in diameter. While this keeps the design compact, it significantly impacts stability. A 50mm curb can double the force needed to get over it compared to a standard bicycle wheel, and potholes as shallow as 75mm can completely stop the scooter. This design flaw increases the risk of falls and accidents, particularly in cities with poor road infrastructure.
Battery Placement – A Risky Design Choice
Many e-scooters have their battery compartment located underneath the deck, close to the ground. While this helps with balance, it exposes the battery to mechanical damage, water ingress, and overheating. A poorly designed battery enclosure can lead to failures, reducing the lifespan of the scooter or, in extreme cases, causing fire hazards.
Structural Weakness & Stability Issues
Unlike bicycles, which have a frame supporting the rider from below, e-scooters rely on a narrow deck positioned just above the wheels. This makes weight distribution less stable, affecting control, especially at higher speeds. Riders may find it challenging to maintain balance when maneuvering obstacles, increasing accident risks.
Rethinking the Design – What Needs to Change?
To make e-scooters a truly viable and safe mobility solution, manufacturers should:
✅ Increase wheel size for better shock absorption
✅ Reinforce battery compartments to prevent damage and overheating
✅ Improve deck design for better stability
✅ Introduce better suspension systems
E-scooters have enormous potential, but their current design requires urgent improvements. If urban mobility is to be revolutionized, safety should be a top priority.
